you everybody. have a great day. -- captions by vitac -- and i'm michelle griego. tis 4:-- the san mateo bridge gianna franco is in the >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald >>> good morning. it's thursday, december 13. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. >>> we have an accident, a fatal accident that started off as basically a routine call from chp on the san mateo bridge westbound side of the bridge on the peninsula side. it was a two-vehicle accident and one person died at the scene. so the coroner is called out. the right lane is blocked. they expect to have this shut down for the next hour or so. this is west 92 just as you head into foster city on the san mateo bridge. one lane will be completely shut down for an hour because of this fatal accident. use the dumbarton bridge or the bay bridge as an alternate in the meantime. we'll update you when we have more information. here'saw
'm michelle griego. tis 4:-- >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. >>> it's friday, december 21st and we're all still here. >> i'm brian hackney. >> i'm michelle griego. we have developing news right now in antioch where police are searching for a second suspect after a robbery police chase and this fiery crash. officials say they robbed the bonfair market on tenth street and then they drove off. police chased them and the suspect's car crashed and burst into flames. one suspect was arrested but police are still trying to find the second suspect. >>> heavy rain and wind are on tap this morning. lawrence karnow has the forecast. >> it's a very slow-moving storm system but we are seeing that rain moving into the north bay right now. check that out. you can see the yellows and oranges in the north bay. the rest of the bay area so far it is staying dry. but that's going to change. we have seen those winds ramping up over 30-mile-an-hour gusts along the coastline now and still more to come ast

'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on the nose. and we begin with some breaking news in san francisco. a huge water break after a car slammed into a fire hydrant about an hour ago. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is by folsom and 2nd and joins us live in the city with more. i guess they got it capped, but it was really something about a half hour ago or so, right? >> reporter: that's exactly right, frank. the new concern now is actually structural safety. i want to show you, they blocked off the roads in this area. that is essex off of folsom here and they say they're going to block all four lanes right there because they want to sort of assess the damage of what happened. but we want to show you some video that we shot earlier. you can get a look at that gushing water at least 40 feet high is what we're told. and about 1,000 -- tens of thousands of gallons of water that had come out of that break. now, from what we could see, that car knocked the hydrant completely out. we heard reports this started just before 4 a.m. this morning. san francisco police told us offi
. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:01. we are on the scene of breaking news in the east bay at an apartment fire that started about an hour ago. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in hayward getting the latest. >> reporter: that apartment completely destroyed and there was a mother who lived there with her young son. she told us that she thinks somebody threw something into her home and that's what caused it to set on fire. so arson investigators are on scene. they are trying to sort all of this out but we are on dixon street right by the bart station. this was a one-alarm fire but again it caused significant damage and firefighters say that that family won't be able to return home. nobody was hurt. pg&e crews also on scene securing some lines and we are still waiting to get some more information but as i said arson investigators are on scene. elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> new this morning, a fire in east oakland is believed to have been started by squatters. the single-alarm fire happened around 1:30 this morning on 64th and international boulevard. of

>>> good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it was one of the wettest weeks in memory in the bay area. the storm has finally cleared. good news there. but some of its lasting effects are still being dealt with today like this one a massive sinkhole. it's a major road hazard in lafayette. and that's where cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is with it's going to take to clean it up. >> reporter: the city has a huge project on its hands. the city manager said this is the largest sinkhole he hasstein in more than 20 years and going to take a lot of time and money to fix it. a big problem in one lafayette neighborhood a 20-foot sinkhole swallowing a section of mountain view drive near downtown. chris lives steps away in this blue house. the sinkhole is practically in his front yard goosiery. sounded like a big crushing -- crumbling in. >> reporter: the sinkhole opened up yesterday after heavy rain. the creek under the street was running high with debris. >> it plugged the talbot, goes under the road, the water had nowhere to go and so it eroded
'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. >>> today several fire stations may get the axe in the east bay. >> contra costa county's board of supervisors will vote on closures in just a few hour. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at one station where they explain why the closures may be necessary. >> reporter: it would involve four station in contra costa county including 12 i martinez. the district says that's their only options. neighbors say it can't be true. >> i think it's shame. i live in this community and this neighborhood. i have always safe and secure. >> it makes me scared of what could potentially happen if it takes an extra five minutes for a different firehouse to come down. >> reporter: their fear not enough to make change. the reality, contra costa county couldn't get enough votes. the county's fire protection district's funding measure, measure q, failed to pass the november ballot. now four stations are on the chopping block. >> the decision to close a fire station is not easy. there is no perfect modem. we don't go to school to learn how to close fire stati

a bay area youth group standed on the other side of the country. good afternoon everyone. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat. they had traveled from oakland to florida for a youth conference and now members with wondering who would steal their luggage, ids and money. cate cauguiran joins us are from the news room. >> the cash they had on hand was for the entire trip. one member told us they were on the way to the bank and dropped did off and they got hungry and decided to stop. the story has a good ending but it was a rough couple of days for the church group. >> the amount of money that you stole, so you stole dreams, you stole those things that we wanted to do. and you had just left not just me, but you have left many people right now without a shelter, without fooded. >> this group of 24 from oakland's group went to south florida for a youth conference. >> we come excited, eager to receive the things that god has for us, and unexpectedly all of this happens. >> reporter: the group was eating at a restaurant near the airport when their van was broken into. they lost $12,000
, i'm michelle griego. frank is on assignment. >>> a mother and son barely escape after a fast-moving fire rips through their hayward home. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in hayward. arson investigators believe the woman was targeted. >> reporter: as fire completely destroyed this apartment, you can see a big pile of charred debris in the inside absolutely gutted. firefighters are investigating this as arson. >> caused like a explosion and both sides caught fire. >> reporter: shattered glass, a boom, then screaming. that's what residents of the dixon lane apartments in hayward say they heard before a fire tore through this two- story unit. it happened just before 4 a.m. the apartment manager lived here with he on. >> the manager was standing at her front door yelling for help with flames coming out of her apartment. >> reporter: they escaped the flames and a family next door was also evacuated. firefighters say it appears a molotov cocktail was the cause. someone hurled the bottle through a front window. >> we have a pattern on the floor shows accelerant that caused the fi

mallicoat. >>> good morning everyone, it's friday december 7th. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30 now. a 7.3 earthquake struck today near japan. >> it was centered off the northeastern coast. several people have been injured. cate cauguiran is in the news room to tell us the tsunami warning apparently has been lifted. >> it was lifted two hours after the quake hit. other hit. originally authorities issued a warning that a tsunami of two meters could hit the coast. there are no reports of immediate damage although traffic was stopped in some places to check on the roads. one city in the area reported a small tsunami, but the pacific tsunami warning center says there is no widespread risk. it did cause continuous shaking in some areas. buildings in tokyo were reportedly swaying for at least several minutes. now, this is the same region that was hit by a massive earthquake in march of last year. that quake triggered fuel rod melt downs at the nuclear plant killing at least 60 people as it swept away cars, boats and homes. thankfully this quake is nothing compared to last

i'm michelle griego. >> it is monday. hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5. and we begin the hour with breaking news. firefighters are at the scene of a big rig fire. >> the fire is on the 2600 block of fairmont drive and according to dispatch, at least one person was trapped inside the cab of the truck for some time. it's been burning for more than an hour and a half. downed power lines may be on the truck making it difficult to douse the flames. pg&e is on the scene and we have crew on the way. >> in the meantime, let's check traffic and find out if it's causing any problems. >>> because of the activity, they have closed roads in and around that area, especially fairmont. this is at the 2600 block of fairmont. it is shut down at last check between 580 and lake chabot. use an alternate in the meantime. we'll continue to keep you updated. fairmont is completely blocked off between 580 and lake chabot. as you work your way through the east bay, the freeways are looking pretty good. we have a broken down vehicle at the incline of the bay bridge. traffic early, still quiet a
bay area bridges. >>> good morning, it's thursday, december 20. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank has the morning off. time now straight up 5:00. >>> all clear for one peninsula neighborhood. >> that's after authorities discovered volatile chemicals inside a home. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is san mateo with more. >> reporter: the fire department didn't know what they were dealing with so they did everything by the book. here's where they bagged up sand to try to keep these chemicals safe before they blew it up. this is the house where the chemicals were found in san mateo on parrott drive. the windows boarded up. it was an exercise for all of the emergency responders involved and for the entire neighborhood. the fire department got a call around 4:30 yesterday afternoon saying the person who lives this is house found a cache of chemicals in the basement that had apparently been here for more than 30 years. >> it was acid and ether. we were told they were -- something that needed to be taken care of on site. they couldn't transport it. it's very dangerous. the chan

colorado >>> good morning. it's monday, december 3. i'm hockey. >> michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it's 5:30. the rain is past for now but some of the effects continue from all the days of downpours last week. one of the biggest is a large sinkhole on mountain view drive in lafayette, a road hazard as well as a health and safety issue. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is live at the scene right now. luckily, no one was hurt. >> reporter: luckily nobody was hurt, but the sinkhole got close to homes. i want to show you the sinkhole behind me. it covers two lanes. so it is causing some major problems along mountain view drive in lafayette. now, let's go ahead and bring up video. i'll explain what happened. the sinkhole opened up yesterday afternoon following some heavy rains. the storm caused a creek to overflow, saturating the ground and eroded the street which caused it to suddenly drop. nobody was hurt but a few homes were without water while utility crews repaired underground lines. this neighborhood sits near downtown lafayette just a

's wednesday, december 12. i'm michelle griego. >> good morning, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:31. we begin with a toddler who was taken to the hospital this morning after a suspected drunk driver crashed into an apartment building in san jose at 3 a.m. on taylor street near highway 101. police say the truck slammed into the room where the child was sleeping. the driver tried to get away but was stopped and taken into custody. no word on the extent of the toddler's injuries. but we'll keep you updated as we get updates ourselves. >>> 5:31. a cold storm bringing a little bit of rain and a chance of a little bit of snow on some of the peaks around the bay area. >> i think if we snow it will be a dusting very support radic but that's pretty exciting. we have showers out on the roads. wet early on. we could have brief downpours so watch out for that. you will see a few showers in san mateo and scattered around the bay area but the worst is gone. this is a cold storm so there's not a lot of moisture with t behind that we just get into more clouds and scattered showers this morning. the temperatu
'm michelle griego. the san mateo bridge opened all lanes after a deadly accident caused slowing for several hours. gianna has the latest. >> you know, chp said 6:00 they were hoping to have everything reopened and just like clockwork all lanes are now open westbound san mateo bridge. this accident happened at about 3:30 this morning. it was towards the peninsula side as you head into foster city. you're looking live at church. so delays are improving but it's still a backup. we were seeing delays. this two-car crash was reported just as a normal incident at first but again, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. so they have that closure down for quite some time. hopefully things are improving. all lanes are now open. you should use the dumbarton bridge just for the next maybe 15, 20 minutes. things should be good after 6:30. let's jump to the maps. we have a new trouble spot to report westbound 580 at high street. getting word of an accident where a vehicle may have hit a pedestrian in the road. no word yet if it's blocking the main lines of the freeway or if the accident happened on
19. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank has the week off. time now is 5:30. >>> and there is breaking news this morning out of campbell. firefighters have found a body at the scene of a fire. anne makovec has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: a lot of questions right now. i'm in campbell and you can see the storm unit there behind me. the fire department was called here at about 1 a.m. after somebody reported smoke coming from that storage unit. when firefighters got here, they found a body inside. now, they are not calling this a murder investigation. they say they don't know how the person died. the coroner removed the body and will try to figure out what happened here at this small apartment complex in campbell. the police department is here and the arson squad will be reporting soon this morningas well, and get a little more information as far as the damage to the storage unit, not significant. it looks like structurally the storage unit is fine. they are taking the stuff out and trying to find more clues into how this person died. anne ma >>> good morning, it's tuesday, december 18. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank is on vacation this week. the time is 31 minutes after 5:00. >>> this morning, in newtown, connecticut, students return to class at all schools except for sandy hook elementary. >> that campus will remain a crime scene indefinitely after friday's mass shooting. investigators are still trying to determine why gunman adam lanza singled the school out which he attended as a child. federal agents say lanza fired guns at shooting ranges over the years, but there is no evidence he did so recently as practice for the rampage. cbs news's marley hall has more newtown. >> reporter: it's back to school today for the children of newtown, connecticut with one exception, the students of sandy hook elementary. kenneth canfield is a fourth grader at sandy hook. he was there that tragic day. >> he heard screaming and gunshots and the room he was in was being banged on by the gunman. >> reporter: kenneth and his classmates won't be returning to sandy hook elementary school. when they do go back, they w
